Using the spell-check feature in gedit requires that you first enable the spell-check plugin. To enable the plugin, select Edit ▸ Preferences ▸ Plugins ▸ Spell Checker.
Select Tools ▸ Autocheck Spelling to make gedit highlight spelling errors while you type.
